August 2, 2023:

Mods are a fundamental aspect of most games that are available on PC. They are community-created and provide a level of customisation for players who wish to access some content or mechanics that are not currently included in the game. As one would expect, Baldur's Gate 3 mods have been an integral part of the game since it landed in early access.

While the available mods were sparse at the beginning of Baldur's Gate 3, they have since grown and players can now search for all sorts of mods. From small changes such as UI fixes to full-blown expansions, there is no shortage of top-tier mods to add to your PC version of Baldur's Gate 3.

The best mods in Baldur's Gate 3

A majority of the top community mods so far in Baldur's Gate 3 have been aimed at delivering content that has yet to become available in the early access build of the game. However, with the full PC release of the game coming up very soon, we will be omitting all of those mods since they will soon become outdated.

Instead, we will focus on mods that improve certain areas of the game, add extra content, or make the user experience more enjoyable.

A sample of the options available in Customizer's Compendium.

1. Customizer’s Compendium

Starting off, we have a classic mod in the Baldur's Gate 3 community. Customizer's Compendium (the eighth edition) is a giant mod that completely overhauls the character creator mechanic that players have access to.

With this mod, players have a much larger selection of cosmetic options to customise their character with. Players can change most of the facial features of their character to completely redesign them in whatever image they desire.

2. Tav’s Hair Salon

Speaking of character customisation, this next mod will only add to your character creation experience. Tav's Hair Salon once again overhauls the character creator and gives players access to a wide variety of hair options.

The main draw of this mod is that it offers brand-new hairstyles that you won't find elsewhere in Baldur's Gate 3. It can be quite annoying to see a random NPC share your same hairstyle, so this mod will ensure that your character is stylish their its own right. As of right now, the mod only has hairstyles for certain classes, so check its page on Nexus Mods to see if your favourite class is supported.

3. Legendary Items

Who doesn't love some new legendary items? This mod does exactly what you think it does; it adds 20 legendary items to Baldur's Gate 3 that are not accessible elsewhere in the world.

You can obtain all 20 of the items immediately using a new spell called 'Dark Pact.' Upon using the spell, your inventory, or your target's inventory, will become full of bags that contain the items. Basically, this mod is for players who are seeking some variation in terms of their weapons and armour choices in Baldur's Gate 3.

4. LVLUp

This next mod will take your character's progression to the next level, literally. LVLUp is a mod that increases the level of basic classes in Baldur's Gate 3 to a massive 20. In the full build of the game, the level cap will be set at 12, which is much higher than the cap of level 5 that was active during the early access build.

The LVLUp mod abides by the 5e ruleset, and adds the appropriate spells for all of the extra levels. It's worth noting that the mod's creator stresses that players only install this mod for a new playthrough, as installing it after a save has been created can cause some issues with its functionality.

5. ImprovedUI

We're going to conclude with a simple, yet extremely helpful mod. ImprovedUI does exactly what it says it will do, which is to make the overall user interface in Baldur's Gate 3 more user-friendly.

It aims to do this by adding several features to the UI. This includes adding a picture mode button on a few different screens, removing any unwanted text, changing the layout of the character creator, and more. While these changes aren't massive by any means, they are certainly noticeable to veterans of the game.

How to install mods in Baldur's Gate 3

Installing mods in any PC game can be both an easy and complicated process. Some mods require a much more drawn-out process to work properly while others can be downloaded and installed within a few minutes.

With regard to Baldur's Gate 3, most mods call for you to place a certain file in the game's file directory. For example, ImprovedUI states you need to place its .pak file under "%LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods" within your directory. Most mods will provide a step-by-step installation process on their page so players know exactly what to do.

Players can also take the Mod Manager route. You can use Vortex, Nexus Mods' Mod Manager, or something like the dedicated BG3 Mod Manager. There's also Candor, another Baldur's Gate 3 mod manager. You can click on the links above to see exactly how to install and use the mod managers. This will make things a little tricker in the short run, but easier in the long run.

If you're an experienced modder, you can always simply manually install the mods yourself by following the directory instructions on the mod's download page.

We're sure many more amazing mods will be developed after the official release of Baldur's Gate 3 on August 3. For now, though, players can get started with these five mods and get the basic installation process down.
